We learn through play, it’s in our human nature. That is why we see play kitchen play sets, tool play sets, doctor play sets, veterinary play sets, etc. We learn best by playing, experimenting, and exploring. One of my personal and professional goals was to create a digital game board for my 8th-grade Computer Application classes to introduce Spreadsheets. In the past I have used Spreadsheet Battleship, Sudoku, and other interactive digital games. I do this one to capture the attention of my students, two change the perspective of how spreadsheets can be used, and three to inspire.

The digital tool that I used to construct my digital game board is Flippity. I love the tools Flippity has created that make learning fun and engaging. Flippity has created spreadsheet templates that are amazing. All you have to do is replace their content with yours. Once you have personalized the content the key to making it work is sharing the spreadsheet to the World Wide Web, a.k.a. the internet by publishing it to the web. Flippity offers step-by-step instructions, as well as frequently asked questions. All to aid in a positive experience in using their tools.

Here is the game I created for my 8th-grade Computer Application classes. Feel free to personalize it to meet your needs. I did use my Bitmoji and Google Draw in creating some of my squares. The key in using that method in creating my squares is by publishing my Google Drawings to the web and using that url in the Flippity template.

8th-grade Computer Application Trivia - File

8th-grade Computer Applications Trivia - Game

Other Digital Games:

Flippity Game Show - https://www.flippity.net/QuizShow.htm

Flippity Virtual Breakout - https://www.flippity.net/VirtualBreakout.htm

Flippity Matching Game - https://www.flippity.net/MatchingGame.htm

Eric Curtis’s Battleship - https://www.controlaltachieve.com/2016/11/battlesheets.html

Katie Ann Wilsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17958754623475754293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7323740860778012309.post-45241108629767924802019-06-21T14:06:00.000-05:002019-06-21T14:06:01.022-05:00Student-Created Digital Breakouts...

Education is not one size fits all. To meet the needs of today's learners teachers need to use a wide variety of ways to assess students' knowledge. In my opinion, traditional testing truly only measures a student's ability to memorize, regurgitate, and discard. Why hold onto that information if you do not truly understand it, apply it, or even have the desire to use the information. For example, I once had to memorize dates for certain battles for a class. To this day I cannot recall those dates, I could for the test though but not now. Those dates are not important to me, I cannot use them in any way in my current life. Now the reasons for those battles, that information could be important, but I spent so much time trying to memories those dates I have also forgotten the reason for the battles.

As a teacher, we need to truly understand what students know and teach them how to apply their knowledge. We also need to instill a desire to continue to learn and grow. Just memorizing data to pass a test is not good enough in today's society. We also need to teach our student to think, troubleshoot, problem-solve, and to realize their first attempt is not their last one. Having students create, explain, demonstrate, design, explore, develop, etc... will allow teachers to truly assess not test but assess a student's understanding.

We need to rethink what an assessment looks like. We also need to embrace that each student is different and not all assessments will work. Having students create Digital Breakouts is a way we as teachers can personalize learning for each student and truly assess their knowledge and abilities.

So what is a Digital Breakout?

A digital breakout uses the same concept of solving a series of clues to unlock locks as the physical breakout does. A Google Form is used as the locks. Using a Google Form you can create a wide variety of locks. A digital breakout has no need for any additional equipment. All that is necessary is a device connected to the Internet.

Students can create Digital Breakouts to demonstrate their knowledge on any topic. Once the Digital Breakout has been created then other students can apply their learned knowledge of the topic to solve the clues and breakout.

I will be speaking at ISTE19 over how students can create Digital Breakouts and how teachers can use these student-created breakouts as an assessment tool. So join me on June 26th at 1:00pm room 120A to learn more. If you cannot make it below is a link to the resources I will be sharing.
Surfing for Quality Digital Tools...

The number one question I am asked is what tools do I use with students and how do I determine if the tool is the tool my students should use. I think of digital tools and resources like shoes and just like shoes, you will use the pair that works the best for the situation you are in. For example, you do not want to wear flip-flops when you are climbing or hiking you would use the proper footwear to get the job done. It is the same with digital tools, devices, and resources. Just like shoes digital tools, devices, and resources also depends on personal choice. The tools I use may not work or fit your needs so you need to use the tools you feel comfortable with.

The other side of the coin when using digital tools, devices, and resources you need to pick ones that take you and or your students beyond. For example, if you have an interactive whiteboard a.k.a. a SMART board and you never physically touch and interact with the board you basically just replaced your projector screen with a solid board version. To help you go to the next level in implementing technology into your curriculum I have designed an interactive rubric. This rubric is designed from research and is based on the SAMR framework. There are a few questions you will need to ask yourself about the tool, device, or resource you are wanting to use. Through the questioning, the rubric will guide you to if the tool you are wanting to use is going to move you more into transforming the learning or if you should think a little more about using the tool.

Just like any tool it really depends on how you plan to use it and not every tool works for everyone. Since I am a doctoral student and I am conducting research I am collecting the results of the rubric. You will be emailed a copy of your results when you hit the submit button. If you do not want me to collect your results I will have a second option that will allow you to make a copy of this rubric and use it. The copy will save to your Google Drive and you can use it from there.
I had not realized that I had not shared how to print on Post-it Notes. Keep in mind the instructions will remain the same but Post-it Notes come in all sizes and styles. The file I am sharing with you is for the standard Stick-it Note. Feel free to change the document to fit your Post-it Note. The document I am sharing with you is a Google Draw file, so you will need to be logged into your Google Account to use this document.

I tell my students all the time there are many many ways to use technology to get to your desired end results. If the method I am sharing with you does not work for you to feel free to modify the steps and use a different tool. You are making a copy of the file I am sharing and it will auto save to your Google Drive.

Step 1:

Print out the template or Master "Print On Post-it" page. Click Here to get your copy. (This is a Google Drawing File. You must be logged into your Google Account to use.)

This page will allow you to align your text in order to print on the Post-it Notes.

Step 2:

Place Post-it Notes on the squares printing out on your page.

Make sure the sticky side is towards the Words “Top of Print”.

When the Stick-it Notes go through your printer you want the sticky sections to go first so the Stick-it Notes do not get jammed in the printer.

Step 3:

Place your page with the Stick-it Notes in the paper tray of your printer.

Try face down with the words "Top of Print” at the top of the paper tray.

Step 4:

Type what you want to be printed on the Stick-it Notes in the squares of this document.

Print

Remove Stick-it Notes off of the printed page.

Step 5:

Repeat steps 2-4 as many times as needed.

Usually, my goal is to inspire others. I've been told that inspiration naturally radiates from me. This year I want to go beyond just inspiring others. I want to give others the tools to become motivated, adventurous, knowledgeable, and empowered. It has been a dream of mine to develop an innovative conference for educators.

This past year I have been focusing on obtaining a doctorate in education. My focus for my doctorate has been to become a Teacher Leader in Digital Transformation (a.k.a. Edtech). For my doctorate, I can either choose to do a research project or create something. I have decided to create an Innovative Edtech Conference for my Capstone project. With the help of my PLN iMake-KS is going from a wish to a dream and into reality. So my #OneWord for 2019 is going to be #iMake.
2018 was a year for several chapters in my life to come to an end. After ten years of being the techie teacher at the Pratt school district, I had to say goodbye. Watching my students grow up over the past ten years made it very difficult to walk away. It really was hard to leave that part of my life behind as our family was relocated to Dodge City for my husband's work. 2018 also marked the last year I would see either of my sons' faces at the school I work at. My youngest son just had to grow up and graduate from high school and then head off to college. It was a struggle knowing that I wouldn't see their faces in the hallway or them surprising me by popping into my classroom just to say hi. I also had to say goodbye to the home my sons grew up in and the only home our daughter has ever known. The hardest part of 2018 was saying goodbye to one of the most influential women I know. My grandmother who has been a huge part of my life since I was nine years old left this world to join my grandfather.

My grandmother taught me a lot of lessons that still touch me today. She taught me to always make my bed every morning. In a world of chaos having one part of your life neat, tidy, and organized gives you a sense of peace at the end of the day. Having just one piece of your life orderly will also allow you to start each day fresh and new. She also taught me that you need to look your best every day no matter if you were going out of the house or not. Whenever I saw her, she always had your make-up on. She always had her eyebrows done and her lipstick on. She would also wear a piece of jewelry and a dress every day. It was important to her to always look her best. She would tell us you never know what kind of encounter you will have each day, so it is best to always put your best foot forward and look your best. I may not be dress wearing person, but I do put on my make-up, do my hair and try to look nice every day. I have even started to make my own jewelry to wear.

As you may have noticed I had not have been very regular in sharing my techie tips and tricks this past year. With the energy, I had left from all of the changes that have occurred in 2018 I decided that I needed to narrow my focus and work on my doctoral studies. Teaching full-time, studying full-time, being a parent and a wife full-time something in my life had to take the back burner.

2019 is going to be the year of new chapters and acceptance. I had to get to a point and accept the changes in my life, accept what I can not change, and accept that my future is unwritten. I do not know where I will go from here or which path I will take. There are many paths in front of me that I would have never dreamed I would be on. Who would ever have thought the quiet small town girl would be a leader in educational technology? The girl that several people thought would never attend college or obtain a degree. A girl that was overlooked and even brushed to the side. Who lived literally on the wrong side of the tracks. Would be looking at becoming a professor, a teacher of teachers, a leader in education. My grandmother apparently knew that I would go the distance. When I was being told that it wasn't possible, I would not make it. She is in my corner encouraging me. With her, as my cheerleader, I was the first person in my family to attend college. Not only did I obtained a degree I am currently working on my third degree. Even though she will not see me finish, I know she is still cheering me on.

As we reflect on the past year, we need to realize we can not change the past, but accept that those encounters happened, move forward, and focus on what we can improve. In 2004 I presented my 1st conference. It was literally the first conference I had attended in my career. The majority of the conferences I have attended I have presented at. 2019 will be no different. I will be presenting so far at two edTech conferences that mean the world to me, MACE-KS and ISTE. I will be sharing how students can create digital Breakouts that will allow students to show their understanding for a particular topic. It is my first step in showing that in education if we continue to assess students in the same manner time in and time out via a standardized test, we do not fully grasp an individual student's understanding. Just keep in mind if a fish was judged on his ability to climb a tree we as a society will label that fish a failure. That poor fish then believes that he is indeed a failure. The field of education needs a change and what better way to make a difference than from within. After all, education makes all professions possible.
Teaching students critical thinking skills is a struggle for teachers. Students are used to receiving information and repeating it, then moving on to the next set of information. To get students to dive in deeper and make connections is hard and time-consuming in the classroom. For the past year and a half, I have either created or used pre-made digital breakout with my students to help them learn critical thinking skills.

It dawned on me as I was teaching skills such as hyperlinking, uploading images, embedding, and just creating with digital tools that my students needed to be building digital breakouts. I am limited on the digital tools my students can use, either because they cost or the filter blocks them. SMORE is one of the tools that I use with my students. Using the free version of SMORE my students are limited to only creating three SMOREs.

My school is also a GAFE school (Google Apps for Education). SMORE is a simple way of learning how to upload images and learn to hyperlink. You can even embed a Google Form within SMORE. Before I had my students create their digital breakout in SMORE, I had them write a story and create a SMORE around their story. Giving them practice using the different options within the SMORE format.

Creating the Digital BreakoutEDU:

I placed students into groups with one student being the captain. The captain was in charge of the SMORE. Since students are limited to only being able to create three SMORES I had the captain create the digital breakout with their SMORE account. As a team, they had to devise a plan for sharing the information with the captain for it to be placed on the SMORE. The team was also required to document what role each person did in the creating of the SMORE.

The Requirements for the Digital BreakoutEDU:

The captain had to obtain feedback from the team on the topic their digital breakout would be over. Then decide on the theme keeping the team's interest in mind.

On the Google Form, they had to have 5 to 8 clues.

I demonstrated how to set up the Google Form for it to work correctly for the digital breakout.

Each link had to take the user to where a clue could be found.

Each image had to relate to the digital breakout & provide a clue.

If the Google Form needed a particular format such as a date or letters for a directional lock, then under the clue an example would be required.

A story or scenario was needed on the SMORE to tie all the pieces together.

Summer Apps....

I bet you are asking yourself; "What apps would an EdTech Leader load on her own children's' personal iPads/Tablets/Smartphones for the summer?" As most teachers and parents know that you lose some of the knowledge if you don't use it on a regular basis, so kids need to exercise that learning muscle.

What would an EdTech Leader load on her own children's iPads/Tablets/Smartphones? Well you are in luck. I have children at all levels. Below is a list of apps that my children use.

All Apps are subject to change, depending on the developer. Some may be free now and may cost later or vise a versa.

My oldest son is in college and doesn't use a tablet other than for reading, but he still uses EdTech tools, but on his computer. Most of these web-tools do have apps. I like to use EdTech tools that are universal. Meaning I like to be able to touch any device and access my content being a computer, my phone or my tablet.

Desmos

My youngest son will be entering his senior year and is busy studying for his ACT, or we like to hope he is. He also using a computer over a tablet but does have some useful Android apps on his phone and has access to an iPad. Most of these do have apps.

For the people that call me mom by mistake or out of endearment. I still call them my kids even if we are on summer break I would load these apps on their devices.

I change my daughter's apps frequently. When she masters a learning app I will change it out, or if I find a better creating app. I do currently block YouTube for her, just because she was spending most of her time on non-educational videos or preschool level cartoons.

If they are going to use the device just to watch stupid cat videos or to play numb minding games we take it away for a short period of time. I do allow 1 of those mind numbing games for her to play, just because sometimes you need to zone out from time to time. If she plays it the most then I do remove them.
My teaching career has focused around "EdTech" before the term was even used. When I was working on my Masters well over a decade ago the focus was a specialist in "Classroom Technology" since Edtech wasn't even a term we used yet. Today if you did a search in the online Merriam-Webster dictionary you will not find the definition for Edtech, but it is a term we widely use today. In 2013 EdTechReview added to their online dictionary "What is Edtech?"

EdTech stands for Education Technology.

EdTech is a study and ethical practice for facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.

In other words, use of technology in form of products/apps/tools to enhance learning, pedagogy and instruction. It is not replacing any current practices, but it is the use of those tools to aid in the delivery of education.
~ EdTechReview

I tell my students that there is NO Right answer when it comes to learning how to use a tech tool. You need to find the way to use the technology or tool that best works for you. Technology is always changing and evolving. Which is the reason I love to teach using tech. It challenges me and keeps me learning. To think about how much technology and its' uses have changed is amazing. To know that we've sent men to the moon on less technology knowledge decades ago and our smartwatches, cell phones, and tablets have more processing power now just blows my mind.

To think back to when my parents were in school and to know that they job I teach wasn't even a thought or blip in the world of education. The world we are preparing on students will not be the same world we know right now. So how can we teach our students to be prepared for their future if we have no idea what will be in their future?

Did you know that there are ten or more ways to copy something using technology depending on the device, app/software you are using? Do you know all of the ten or more ways? How many ways could you copy in 1970, 1950, 1930, 1900, or earlier? My point is that the world is ever changing including how we learn.

We need to teach our students to think of all of the possible ways to get the solution you desire. For example how many equations can you write were the answer equals 4? How many ways can you use the word SUN or JUMP? We need to teach critical thinking and ways to apply tools not necessary ways to use them. How I would use a tool is not necessary the way you would.

I like to let my students explore what works for them. You would not believe how many times I hear but your the teacher tell me if this is the right answer. My response normally is "You tell me". Did you get the desire outcome? Will your solution solve the problem if not what can you change? When I tell them that there is no right answer, they get frustrated with me. For so long they've been conditioned that there is a right and wrong way or right and wrong answer. There are a million possible ways to write equations were the answer is 4 like there are a million ways to use technology tools in education.

There is NO RIGHT Answer just what works best for you.

We learn best by exploring and discovery. Allow time for yourself and your students to discover what works best for them. Companies like Google believe in this and allow 20% time. 20% time empowers employees to be more creative and innovative. So doesn't education give students time to explore, create, and innovate? Why do we focus on memorization and drill and kill strategies. Why not let them explore and discover. When we learned to walk our parents didn't sit us down and talked about the science of walking and drilled us the facts. No we discovered hey if I stand here and then move my leg I move. We tried things and if we didn't get to our desire location we tried something else until we achieved what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go. There is no one way in learning to walk, we discovered what works best for us. Some of us even became innovators during this process and found ways to get where we wanted to go fast or create short cuts. We are wired to think like this but some where in the learning process we lost it.

So how many ways you can you think of to copy something?

2016 was a year certain a year of change. My oldest son graduated from high school and then turned around and went off to college. My youngest son finally had a bedroom all to himself and had to step it up a little in helping out with the house and watching his little sister. Both boys started working part time and shopping for their own clothes. Which has been nice and funny at them same time, they have ordered the same items off of Amazon, in the same sizes. Our lives are suppose to change it is just the circle of life. I shared with my sons that their are four stages of Santa Claus. They just laughed at me, but think about it. At a young age believe in Santa. Then as we get older we stop believing. When we be come parents we become Santa. The last stage takes the longest to achieve but when we become grandparents we start to look like Mrs. Claus or Santa himself. Thus there are four stages of Santa. For the past 18 years I've been in stage three. Some day I will make it to stage 4, but it will be Eric that will look like Santa. My point is that life changes, it would dull if everything stays the same.

In 2016 I've made some great friends and attended some pretty inspiring conferences. I even wrote and published a book. I get a kick out of being able to say "Hey I wrote the book on That!". A group of ladies made my day when they stop me to ask if I was the Diary of a Techie and wanted to take a selfie with me. I kind of felt like a mini celebrity for a moment. When I attend edCamps or conferences I like to participate as a learner, because I am also there to learn. I was tickled pink when I attend an edCamp this summer and a group of teachers were making sure everyone knew Katie Ann was the go-to person for augmented reality in education, they even made sure everyone wrote down my contact information. Amy one of the teachers in the group made sure I even wrote down the blog address & Twitter Id. She was very passionate about it. I was tickled because she didn't recognized me. Guess I don't look the same with a ponytail and glasses on. Towards the end of the edCamp I did introduced myself to them. Pictures were taken, info exchanged, and I answered a lot of questions and gave them some tips on using augmented reality in their classrooms.

For 2017 I want to inspire others. As a teacher I plant seeds in a garden, some seeds grow quickly while others take a lot of care before they bloom. I don't only want to watch my garden grow, I want to inspire others to grow and change. Instead of being a so called gardener planting seeds I want to tend to a garden that nourishes the growth of caterpillars and butterflies. Think of me as a Caretaker of a Butterfly Garden, tending to the plants that nourishes both the caterpillars who have yet to find their wings and the butterflies that have made the garden their home. I want to inspire others grow their wings, help them take flight, and support their growth. I not only want to inspire others to grow but to become Caretakers of their own gardens. I want to help others find the right plants, soil, and sun for their own garden. When each have our own gifts, talents, interests, and needs I just want to help develop them & inspire a new caretaker.
For a lot of us the seasons have changed and the colder weather is starting show her snowy side. For others of us we may have never seen snow before. We might not understand how the colder weather creates unique crystallized water droplets each with their own pattern and design. So how can someone explain snow to another person that has never seen or touched it? As a teacher how can we get our students engaged in either reading about a winter or snowy story or to write about it? Why not use a augmented trigger to perk students' interest?

Penfold Quiver's fun penguin loves to catch snowflakes and play in the snow. Why not have student interact with Penfold and have him catch snowflakes. As a teacher my 1st thought about having Penfold catching snowflakes is to use the augmented content as data collecting or graphing.

Why not use Penfold to introduce a story that takes place in winter such as :

Winter by Marissa Meyer

Winter Street, Winter Storms, Winter Stroll by Elin Hildenbrand

The 1st Day of Winter by Denise Fleming

Lemonade in Winter by Emily Jenkins

The Bravest Dog Every- The True Story of Balto by Natalie Standiford

Let it Snow by Maryann Cocca-Leffler

Winter is for Snow by Robert Neubecker

You can even use Penfold as a writing prompt:

How would explain to someone who has never seen snow what snow looks like?

What does snow feel like?

What games could you play in the snow?

How many ways can you catch snow?

What vocabulary could students use with Penfold?

Below Zero

Bitter Cold

Arctic

Temperature

Blustery

Frosty

Ice Crystal

There are many ways to use this fun snow catching penguin to get students excited about winter even if they have never seen snow before.

When I first saw Quiver's new app Quiver Fashion I became ecstatic. I've been looking for a way to get more girls involved in my STEM class. I currently only have 3 girls participating. My plan for this app is to get my students to think about what a Material Engineer might do. I am going to have my students develop a new material that can do multiple things such as self pressing, self cleaning, bulletproof, fireproof, monitors heart rate, monitors blood pressure, etc...

Since there is a sharing option within the app it will also be a great way to collaborate. I could have one group design the fashion, one group, design the brand, and one group work on the marketing. I can even have a project manager, a department leader, a graphic designer, a social media expert, and run the unit like a mini business. I could even bring in sample material patterns, a sewing machine, and a sample target audience. I could then let my students make mock up designs and pitch their product to the sample target audience. I would use the Quiver Fashion app as the tool for my students to design their fashions and try them out on the catwalk. My students can even take pictures and video clips within the app to use in their marketing campaigns.

I also thought the Quiver Fashion app would be very useful in teaching careers. Such as having students design what a doctor would wear, a vet, a lawyer, a teacher, a nurse, a plumber, a banker, a fast food employee, etc... You could even have students pick a career and create a line of clothing for that career. For example a McDonald's employee. What would their uniforms look like? What would be the benefit for buying your line of clothing? Is your material stain resistant, self cleaning, wrinkle free, self tucking, self pressing, etc...

You could even use this app to help show historical fashion. For example students could design what they think a Native American might have worn, a peasant, a sailor, a pirate, an Egyptian Queen, etc... You could even have students design fashion for historical characters. For example what would George Washington's wife or daughter might have worn compared to what George Washington Carver's wife or daughter might have worn. Or famous women such as Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart, etc...

What other ways can you use Quiver's new app Quiver Fashion?
For the month of October I started challenging other educators in how many ways could they use Quiver's pumpkin page in their classroom. I posted a few ideas that come to my mind such as having students write out step-by-step instructions in how to crave a Jack-o-Lantern and writing a spooky story with their pumpkin creature a character of the story. After having some interesting conversations with other educators and reminding me that everyone do not always celebrate holidays or the same holidays. This really made me think how can I include those students so that they can experience the augmented pumpkin. It hit me, have students do a descriptive writing project and then record themselves describing the pumpkin using Quiver's video recorder. There will be a creepy sound recorded, but I think it is only activated when you tap the screen. You can always do a recording with no sound and pull that video into iMovie and then do a voice over recording within iMovie if you are worried about the creepy sound.

There are many ways of doing a descriptive writing of a pumpkin. My thoughts are to have students write describing a pumpkin with of course not telling people what it is. Using descriptors such as vertical creases running from the top of the object all the to the bottom, a hollow sound when you know on the object, etc... Once students have written their descriptive paragraphs then I would activate the Quiver pumpkin and have students record via the Quiver app themselves describing the pumpkin. I would then take their recordings and upload them to my Google Drive and create a QR code. I would put the QR codes on their written out description with "Scan the QR Code for the Answer" posted on each writing project.

Another way would be to have students write a poem about a pumpkin or a pumpkin patch or even a riddle. Then have students record and make a video clip using the Quiver app explaining their answer. Save the video clips to an online folder such as Google Drive. Then create a QR code for each video clip. Past the QR codes on a bulletin board along with the students written out work.
It's October and it's time for scary and spooky stories. Why not spark your student's creativity with Quiver's augmented pumpkin coloring sheet and turn it into a scary story writing prompt. Below there are some writing prompts that might help spark that scary story in your students. I even have a "How to Write a Scary Story" brainstorm worksheet to help organize students' thoughts. Using Quiver's pumpkin sheet have students use the sheet to design one of their characters for their story.

After students have written their scary stories have them record their voice telling the story via the Quiver app. Quiver has built in a video clip recorder as well as an audio recorder. Students can interact with the pumpkin character while they record their scary story. While they are recording their scary story they can tap on their pumpkin character to include sound effects.

There are several ways to share your students' scary stories. You could upload their video clips to your classroom website, classroom Facebook, classroom Instagram, classroom Youtube channel, etc... Once they are online you can create a QR Code to redirect people to the stories. You could post the students' pumpkins on a bulletin board along with each QR Code. How ever you share them your students will love listening to each others scary stories.
Making Augmented Jack-o-Lanterns via Quiver ...

When I was growing up I had to learn how to write out step by step instructions. The best way my teacher had us learn was to write out the process in making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. During the demonstration the person following our instructions could not do anything unless we said it and we couldn't say anything unless we wrote it out. By the end you knew you where successful if the person following your instructions made a successful peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

When I saw Quiver's pumpkin carving augmented coloring page, I thought how fun would it be for kids to type up steps into creating a jack-o-lantern. What tools would you need to carve a Jack-o-Lantern? How would you clean out the pumpkin seeds? What would you do with the pumpkin seeds? How many seeds might be in their pumpkin? What should they do first carve the pumpkin or clean it? How would they carve the pumpkin? What shapes would they make?

If your class was doing a science or math experiment say in comparing a small pumpkin to a larger one and which one would have more seeds you could incorporate it into this augmented activity. Better yet add it to your interactive student notebook. While they are writing out their instructions you could have them include how many seeds they think would be in their pumpkin. As a class you can then do ratio of seeds to pumpkins. You could make a chart of the different shapes used when creating the Jack-o-Lanterns, how many Jack-o-Lanterns have teeth, sunglasses, etc..

After students have typed up their instructions, which I would use Google Docs for. Create a QR Code that will redirect the viewers to the instructions and place the QR Code with each Jack-o-Lantern. If using Google Docs you can either make the page shareable or make it view-able on the web. I would make the instructions view-able on the web. As a class you can decide which step of instructions might make a successful Jack-o-Lantern by voting or making persuasive speeches and try to follow the instructions to the letter on a real pumpkin. For younger students I would have them read off the instructions while the teacher follows and does the carving.

Have you ever thought about having students create a newspaper featuring news from ancient civilizations? There are several ways for students to create newspapers that can feature articles from the ancient civilizations. SMORE an online digital Flyer, Magazine, and Newspaper creator is a great tool for students to use to create a digital newspaper or flyers. Using Blippar's Blipp Builder students or you can add digital content that the reader can interact with via the Blippar app.

For me augmented reality needs to be interactive. If you are planning on linking the ancient newspaper or article to a single website or video then you should use a QR Code. With Blippar you can add several different digital content to a single trigger. (An image or item you scan) For example a couple of video clips, a few links to a websites, pictures, and an audio file, etc... can all be added to a single trigger. Make it interactive not just scannable.

There are other online creators that students can use to create their digital newspapers, articles, magazines, flyers, brochures, etc... No matter what the tool you have students use to create and show their learning just have a rubric for students. Give them a clear idea on what you are looking for. You might to want to also talk about effort and what a quality piece of work looks like.
Quiver's augmented coloring pages are so versatile which makes them possible to be used in writing, story problems, and even fractions and charts. Because of the interactivity with Quiver's coloring pages students can record data to create fractions and charts.

I created this page for my students to record shooting practice in order to create a simple spreadsheet and chart. There are so many chart making tools out there you will need to pick up that works best for you and your students.

My students will be using this page to record their data, sketch out their chart so when it is time to transfer their data to Google Sheets they will have an idea of what their Google chart should look like.

Having my students think their data as a fraction will help learn to read a chart. Playing the shooting practice will help them stay engaged in collecting the data they will need in order to create a chart.

This page would work great in a student's math interactive notebook or in a center. Before using this activity with your students you may want to go over how to collect data and writing out fractions. You may also want to review different charts such as a bar chart verses a pie chart and when you each one.
Augmented coloring pages can go beyond just coloring. They can be used to introduce a topic or concept, as a writing prompt, and solving word problems. Using Quiver's coloring pages I created a few word problems. These pages would be great to add to an math interactive notebook or used in a center. You can turn almost all of Quiver's coloring pages into word problems. I also wanted to take it a step further. I do not just want students to solve word problems but rather they create their own. Using the augmented or the magic part of the coloring pages I ask students to come up with their own word problem and answer.

Before you have students writing their own word problems you may want to equip them with some useful mathematical terms such as twice as many, less than, etc... Using the Frayer model for common mathematical terms in students' ISN would be a great tool for students to refer to when writing their own word problems.

Have students interact with the magical augmented element of the coloring pages before they start to write their own word problems. This will help inspire them as they think about what would be a good problem for others to solve. After students have written their word problems have them share with other students to see if they could come up with the correct answer.

To help bring books to life I started looking for and designing interactive augmented lit trips. Harry Potter is one of my favorite series, and I love the idea of a Marauder Map. A Marauder's map is a form of a augmented map, layering content over a physical object. To view the resources to make your own Marauders map and to access the Lit Trip by Jacob Williams you will need the Blippar app. You will need to scan the above image with the app like you would do with a QR code. Before you scan though enter the code 23722 in Blippar's setting.

If you are using augmented reality with lit trips just make sure they are interactive. If you are going to redirect your students to a single website or Google Map use a QR Code instead of an augmented trigger.
