Reflection of EdcampHome 2014 ....

EdcampHome was the place to be this morning. The organizers of the EdcampHome really brought it today. It was well organized, Kelly did a great job with the Google Scripts and getting everyone where they needed to go. I myself stayed on the EdcampHome page and listened in on a few sessions. I really enjoyed all of the sharing and learning that went on today. I listened in on Augmented Reality and learning how others are using Augmented Reality in their classroom. I also peeked in on the Connected Classroom. Twitter is a great way to wet your feet in becoming a connected educator. I use Twitter to connect and build my PLN. If you would like to connect with me my Twitter handle is @katieann_76. I also use Edmodo to build, connect, and to run my Global Project. I try to share my experiences by writing in my blog. Being apart of the Teacher Learning Community in SimpleK12 is another way I try to connect and share with other educators. Some teachers do find it hard to share what is going on in their classroom. My suggestion is to try one share tool being Twitter, a Blog, a Wiki and etc... Start slow and embrace your passion.

In session 2 I learned about Virtual Field Trips. I didn't realize that Google had started Virtual Field Trips via Google+ Connected Classroom and Google Hangouts. To view upcoming Field Trips or past trips visit the Google+ Connected Classroom.

I needed this little shot of inspiration today. I was able to listen in to all of the sharing while I worked on a presentation for FETC '14, Edmodo, LiveBinders, MACE '14, and ISTE '14. It really helped me to listen in on some of the questions to get an idea what others want to know or understand.

From Word Wall to Quizzes

From a Word Wall to Quizzes...

For the past few weeks I've been teaching my 8th grade computer apps class students how to use an online tool to collaborate, another online tool to create online flashcards, and yet another tool to tie it all together and create online quizzes. With Common Core in full swing it is important that students can apply what they are learning. Business today want their employees to be able to collaborate, communicate, gather data, and produce results. To meet this demand I created a unit that walks students through these steps and learn some technology words in the process.

Step 1: Students research 10 words they think relate to technology in some format.
Step 2: Students collaborate using an online cork board for example a.ka. Wallwisher/Padlet. During this time they are to communicate via email so that no technology words are used more than once.
Step 3: Students then pick any 15 technology words from this online word wall and create online flashcards using Quizlet.
Step 4: Students study other student created flashcards.
Step 5: Students create a online quiz using Google Forms.
Step 6: Students randomly take 10 different student created quizzes.
Step 7: Students create a chart that best represents their results of their quiz.

We are currently one the step of creating a chart that best represents their results.

Tech Tip:

To help organize students' flashcards and quizzes I have created an Symbaloo board. Using a Symbaloo board helps keep my students focused and on the task at hand.

I have been trying to flip my instruction around and had a bright idea. All year I have been giving my students a packet that is full of information about the topic we are studying. Instead of me lecturing what they needed to learn I was trying to guide them to find the most important information out of the packet. My bright idea was to create online games to help guide my students. You can only play the Jeopardy game or Who Wants to be a Millionaire games for so long before students start to get tired of them. So in search of some free tools I found this webtool Review Game Zone.

Step 1: Create your FREE teacher account.
Step 2: Add a "New Test".
Step 3: Enter your questions.
Step 4: Share with your students.

Students can preview the questions in the game. Select from a wide variety of games which has the same questions embedded in them. Students can even take the online quiz and get instant feedback.
