New Features to the Diary of a Techie Chick....

With the changes of technology in education I have made a few changes to my blog. I now have two new pages; The App/Tool of the Week and Augmented Reality. You can find these pages at the top of the screen above the title "The Diary of the Techie Chick".

To stay organized I have tagged all of my posts. The tags will appear underneath the title of the post. For example if you want to know more about IWB a.k.a. Interactive White Boards you click on the tag and if I have any another posts with the IWB tag they will all show up for you.

Twitting the Low Tech Way

Our Twitter Door

With common core we are expected to incorporate more writing, technology, and high-order thinking. I know that lots of classrooms do not 1:1 with computer, so the questions becomes how are we suppose to incorporate technology. I attended an webinar that demonstrated a low tech twitter wall. I thought what a great way to demonstrate that any classroom can incorporate this type of social media into their classroom.

The Assignment:

My students where given a question; What are you looking forward to at LMS?
They where instructed that they needed to start their response with @LMS since they were replying to LMS.
They were instructed that they must write a complete and proper sentence.
We talked about what a complete and proper sentence looked like.
We even solved a math problem. In Twitter you are only allowed 140 characters. We talked about what are characters.
The math problem: If you have to start your Twitter response with @LMS and you are only allowed 140 characters how many do you have left to write your response?
We practice writing our responses then each student picked out their avatar and our Twitter door came to life.

I used the mini bulletin board cutouts for our avatars. We have little monsters, crazy frogs, wacky monkeys, ipods, butterflies, and owls. They kids had fun picking out their avatars and started planning making plans on who we should do our next Twitter response.

Magic Carpet Ride

Magic Carpet Ride ...

As I start planning for the next school year I am kicking around the idea of using a Magic Carpet Ride in my 6th Grade Social Study classes. This will be the 1st year I am teaching this subject. Social Studies in general for me is like a Magic Carpet Ride, you get to go back in time and look at history, culture, events, ruins, and etc...

As I plan my lessons I thought I might share a few resources I have created for this journey I plan on taking my students on.

What Inference Can You Make?

Inference is one of the common core standards that I know is hard to incorporate in a day to day classroom. I find that book covers open a door to inference and also a door into getting kids to read.

Here is a before and after Inference worksheet for the book Lil'a and the Treasure Hunt. The before one ask students to draw a conclusion just by looking at the cover of the book. The after worksheet asks students to draw a conclusion after reading the book.

Common Core - RL.2.7- Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

My 1st Giveaway

Teaching Keyboarding Skills to Grades K-2
Starts July 8th and will end July 15th.

It is hard to teach keyboarding skills to young students, but in this day in age it is a must. The more students are exposed to proper keyboarding skills the more effective and productive they will become. It is not always easy to find the time in the computer lab so I have put together some fun activities you can do with your students in and out of the lab to help them learn keyboarding skills.

I will be giving away a grand total of 4 Teaching Keyboarding to Grades K-2 packets. 2 of the packets will be given away in my Teachers Notebook Store. You will need to visit my store to enter. 2 more packets will be given away via this blog. All you have to do is leave a tip or suggestion on how you help teach young kids keyboarding skills via a comment.

Winners will be announced on the 16th.

This is the 1st time I have tried doing a giveaway so be patient and cross your fingers that all goes smoothly.

Let's Build an Ice Cream Cone

With the temperatures rising I was inspired to create a few fun SMART Notebook Math activities. Now I know what you are thinking; I don't have a SMART Board or my personal computer doesn't have the SMART Board software so I can't use this. Let's break that myth right now. You do not need a SMART Board to use any of the SMART Notebook files.

What you need:

A computer
An internet connection
A SMART Notebook file to open
and this website http://express.smarttech.com

Steps in using SMART Notebook Express:

Go to the website
Click on the blue buttons that says "Open an Existing Notebook File"
Find your file and open it.
Presto you can interact with the file.

Now if you are wanting to use the SMART Notebook Express without being on the internet you can download the software.

You can also create new SMART Notebook files using the SMART Notebook Express. Your kids can interact with any SMART Notebook file.

Practice CVC
Create Mind Maps
Create Graphic Organizers
Make a Book Report
Write/Illustrate Your Summer

iPad App Evaluation

With iPads becoming more and more popular in the classroom so has iPad apps. As teachers and even parents we need to stop and think about a few key elements of the apps we are about to either purchase or download for free.

Relevance - What is the relevance of the the app? What is it's focus and is it relevant to the subject and or topic being taught or learned?
Customization - Does this app offer complete flexibility to alter the content and settings to meet the student's needs?
Feedback - Does the app provide any kind of feedback?
Thinking Skills - Does the app encourage any higher order thinking skills, which could include creating, evaluating or analyzing?
Usability - Can the app be launched and operated independently?
Engagement - Does the app highly motivate the student?
Sharing - Can the student share easily share the student's performance or product he or she created?
Common Core - Can this app be used to meet any of the common core standards?

I have created a printable App Evaluation you can download it either in my TPT store or my Teacher Notebook store. Using the App Evaluation you can rate the relevance, customization, and etc... You can also record/rate the instructions, sound, differentiation of the app.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Lil'a like most kids loves taking care of her mother's flowers, especially when she can pick them and give them to her as a gift. In the story Lil'a and the Treasure Hunt, Lil'a was asked to water her mother's flowers, as a result Lil'a picked some to give to her mother.

How to Make a Interactive Worksheet/Review/Quiz using Google Forms ~Freebie~

I was attending a webinar over using Google Forms in the classroom. I started to play around with it and discovered I could make my form interactive. I thought for a while how I could use this new found knowledge. It dawned on me that I could use this as a worksheet, a review, or even a quiz. The best part of it all is I don't have to grade it. I made it so that my students have to input their names and the hour they attend class, so not only do I do not have to grade it I have a recored of who participated.

Teaching Technology to K-2 Grades

To help my teacher friends find resources on what and how to teach technology to kids in grades kindergarten through the 2nd grade I made boards on Pinterest and a webmix on Symbaloo. I have also made some resources as well.

With technology so enriched in our daily lives it is very important that we teach our kids how to use the tools properly and effectively. Even kindergarteners can be taught letter recognition and build proper keyboarding skills. It is also important for kids to learn the proper technology vocabulary. So when they are needing help they don't say that thinging on the watch-a-call-it is not working. It will also save time and frustration for all parties.
